The Brant County Health Unit has seen three positive human cases for West Nile Virus so far this summer.

They say two pools of mosquitoes tested positive for the virus.

West Nile virus is a disease that is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.

"Positive and suspected West Nile cases are a reminder that preventative measures are important", said Dr. Faisal Khan, director of the department.

Most people infected with the virus have no symptoms at all, or they have flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches and fatigue.

Residents can reduce the opportunity for mosquitoes to breed and multiply. "Dallas County Health and Human Services not only conducts active surveillance to detect WNV and monitor infection rates locally but also educates the community to take preventative action".

The Health Unit is urging the public to take steps to prevent mosquito bites.

At this point a year ago, DCHHS had reported six West Nile infections. The first probable case of the virus in 2018 was reported in Allegheny County in late July. In 2012, the last time Dallas County saw a major outbreak of West Nile virus, 398 residents contracted the virus and 21 died.
