Wake Forest Assistant Basketball Coach Jamill Jones Charged With Assaulting Man Who Later Died

Jamill Jones right was charged with assault in connection with a deadly attack on tourist Sandor Szabo in New York City

Police arrested Jones, of Kernerville, North Carolina, on Thursday and charged him with third-degree assault.

Sandor Szabo died after he tapped on a auto window, mistaking it for his Uber ride, and was allegedly punched by the driver before hitting his head on the pavement in NY. Szabo was on life support through Monday but died Tuesday.

Szabo, who was in town for a wedding, had knocked on a window of an SUV he apparently thought was his Uber ride, his family said. Jones then got out and punched him in the face before fleeing the scene. Szabo, who was intoxicated at the time, hit his head on the pavement after the blow. He was ordered to return to court on October 2.

"The court made the proper ruling with the charges, and the District Attorney's office made the proper ruling with the charges", the lawyer, Alain Massena, said.

The New York Post cited law enforcement sources in reporting that a local resident confronted Szabo about the noise he was making, and that Szabo hit that person in the face.

In a statement, Wake Forest said it would comment further once it gathers more information.

Wake Forest University assistant coach Jamill Jones was arraigned Thursday night on a misdemeanor assault charge and released on his own recognizance. He has also coached at UCF, VCU and Florida Gulf Coast.

Wake Forest is coached by former National Basketball Association star Danny Manning.

Szabo, who lived in Boca Raton with his brother, always had a bright smile and shared a love of fishing, cooking and family, the company said.

"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post continued.

"His lovely spirit and his love of life will remain with us", the company said.
