Kerala Monsoon: Hefty rains lash Wayanad, Palakkad, Punalur, Alappuzha

Rains, landslides kill 24, displace thousands in India's Kerala state

The dam gates were opened after a gap of 22 years, as per the sources. However, with the opening of the shutters, the water level has risen beyond control, and will soon submerge the Cheruthoni town as well. Rescue operations are being carried out round-the-clock, and around 500 relief camps have been set up so far.

Due to heavy rains and resultant floods in Kozhikode and Waynad districts, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been moved to Kozhikode. The Kerala Disaster Management Authority has issued a red alert in Wayanad district till August 14, according to Mathrubhumi.

The state, which has 44 rivers, witnessed its worst floods in 1924 following torrential rains. Buildings and infrastructure have collapsed, leaving over 54,000 people homeless. "Avoid all areas throughout Kerala affected by landslides and flash floods,"it said".

At least 26 people have been killed in the state since Wednesday, said Shibu, who uses one name.

The incessant rains also disrupted landing operations at the global airport in Kochi for almost two hours in view of the possible inundation in the airport area following a rising water level in the Periyar river, flowing nearby. Nearly all 40-odd rivers in the state are in spate, the officials said.

Heavy and tourist vehicles have been banned in Idukki.

Small bridges have been constructed to evacuate stranded people in various places in Kozhikode and Wayanad areas, and rescue operations are now underway.

At least 26 people have been killed so far in Kerala, including 11 in high-range Idukki in landslides.

"People living in the downstream areas of these dams must be cautious".

Five shutters of the Cheruthoni dam of the Idukki water reservoir have been opened since Thursday.

He also said that complete attention should now focus on rehabilitating people living in the low lying areas of Ernakulam district should it become necessary due to the water released from the Idukki dam. He said he would conduct an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas on Saturday. In fact, landslides have resulted in more deaths (25), when compared with floods (4).

"The water that came down the five floodgates, barring at Cheruthoni, has not caused any major crisis", added Mani, who is monitoring the situation from here.

"Spoke to Kerala CM Shri Pinarayi Vijayan and discussed the situation arising due to floods in various parts of the state".
