Weekend Forecast Looks Great To View Peak Of Perseid Meteor Shower
'Unlike a lot of celestial events, meteor showers are easy to watch and no special equipment is needed, although a reclining chair and a blanket make viewing much more comfortable'.
The annual Perseid Meteor Shower is taking place this weekend. The weekend looks warm and muggy with plenty of sunshine, though a few folks could see an isolated T'storm on Saturday afternoon and night. Stargazers will be able to see the falling debris as "shooting stars". Gather a group of friends and sit in different directions, so it will be easier for you to find the radiant, i.e. the spot in the sky where all the meteors radiate from.
The Perseids are caused by the Earth passing through a comet's debris field, according to the American Meteor Society. "Moon is to set at 7.12pm Doha time", the expert added. The meteor shower will peak overnight into Monday, with 70 meteors visible each hour, according to the Royal Astronomical Society. The ice and dust, accumulating over a thousand years, burn up in our atmosphere to create the meteor shower. "In December, you have the Geminids, which have more meteors per hour, but it's pretty cold and people don't want to go out and see them at that point", said Hendershot.
Will You Be Able to See the Perseid Meteor Shower This Weekend?
-Allow your eyes 20-30 minutes to adjust to darkness.
The best time to view the Perseids would be after midnight each night, as that is when the greatest number of meteors will be visible.
Meteor showers are named after the constellation of stars the meteors radiate from. Smoke from the California wildfires that now covers parts of the western US may create hazy sky conditions capable of significantly dimming bright stars - and bright meteors.
