PERSEID METEOR SHOWER It can be best seen from the northern hemisphere
"The shower is the second strongest of the year, rich in fireballs, and only the December Geminids are better (but night is much colder and not so comfortable to observe)", Bill Cooke, a meteor expert at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, told NBC News MACH in an email.
The Perseids are one of the more active meteor showers on stargazers" calendars, producing an average of between 60 and 100 "shooting stars' an hour at their peak.
Dr. Auld says that if you have several people together, a lot of the times two people will say oh there's one, but they're pointing in completely separate directions because there's more than one at the same moment. The darker the sky, the more meteors you'll track. It's all because of the Comet Swift-Tuttle, which zooms close to Earth during its 133-year journey around the sun. The ice and dust, accumulating over a thousand years, burn up in our atmosphere to create the meteor shower.
The Perseids meteor shower is often considered the most spectacular of the year, and this summer's show should be particularly excellent because of the phase of the moon.
This annual meteor shower comes as the earth moves through the debris field of the comet Swift-Tuttle.
She recommends anywhere it's dark, outside the city, for the best views. Meteor showers are a great opportunity for time-lapse videos and long-exposure photography, allowing your shots of the night sky to turn into van Gogh-like paintings of this starry spectacle. There are some comets astronomers have been studying for years and they know they have large clumps along the orbit as opposed to a stream of particles.
Perseids radiate from and are named after an upside down "V" shaped constellation called Perseus.
Cooke said the first shooting stars will appear around 10:30 p.m. local time on august 12 and will come with increasing frequency as the night progresses.
The best viewing will be in a dark location without any light pollution. This will greatly increase the number of meteors seen.
Ali bin Amer Al Shibani, Head of the Omani Astronomical Society said that the date of the meteors can be forecasted and that meteors may last for hours, days or weeks.
