Zimbabwe Opposition Lodges Appeal Against Election Result

Zimbabwe opposition file presidential poll challenge

Zimbabwe's opposition coalition has filed a legal challenge to results of the country's recent election, in a move that delays the inauguration of Emmerson Mnangagwa as president of Zimbabwe.

"It will no longer happen".

Chamisa's lawyer Thabani Mpofu said he had asked the Constitutional Court to nullify the July 30 vote and that his court application meant Mnangagwa's swearing-in had been halted.

The electoral commission declared the Zanu-PF's Emmerson Mnangagwa had 50.8% of votes against the MDC Alliance's Nelson Chamisa's 44.3%.

Mnangagwa, who is seeking to reverse Zimbabwe's economic isolation and attract desperately needed foreign investment, had vowed the elections would turn a page on Mugabe's repressive 37-year rule.

Chamisa's legal team arrived at the Constitutional Court at the eleventh hour with members of the media having been in wait for at least half a day.

The party must prove any irregularities were widespread enough to change the outcome of the vote. "We have a good case and cause".

European Union observers said that the ZANU-PF candidate had benefitted from an "un-level playing field" and some voter intimidation, though global monitors largely praised the conduct of the election.

"We are seeking a declaration to the effect that the presidential election was not properly conducted".

"We shall plan amongst ourselves here (at the top table) to see those who will work full-time at the party to ensure that our party remains strong".

They may now need to send apologies just in case someone turns up.

Global monitors largely praised the conduct of the election itself, although European Union observers said that Mnangagwa, a former ally of Mugabe, benefited from an "un-level playing field" and a degree of voter intimidation. "But if they want to meet us in court we have sufficient legal minds to meet them squarely in court", ZANU-PF legal secretary Paul Mangwana said.

The ruling party was quick to dismiss the bid.
