They declined, though, to detail specific security threats or whether known white supremacists and nationalists, such as rally organizer Jason Kessler, would be in the area.

Last year's protests in Charlottesville on August 11 saw hundreds of neo-Nazi sympathizers, accompanied by rifle-carrying men, chanting white nationalist and anti-Jewish slogans while wielding flaming torches - scenes reminiscent of racist rallies held before the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. "This year they come w/ badges", before the pre-planned rally.

"We've always acted as if black lives never mattered, as if people of color never mattered", Bro told Cooper on Full Circle.

In the USA, a year after a white supremacist rally and counter-protests turned deadly, the city of Charlottesville braces for violence.

"We are treating this as a statewide event", said Virginia Department of Emergency Management coordinator Jeff Stern.

In downtown Charlottesville, Va., authorities are limiting auto and pedestrian traffic, dozens of police in riot gear are patrolling a park in the city's center and some residents have left town in case the weekend turns violent. There were no immediate reports of arrests on campus.

District law states you can't deny service to anyone based on political affiliation, but when it comes to behavior that threatens a protected class, D.C. law does allow businesses to deny services. "Who do you serve?"

University of Virginia students started their own march for justice on Saturday night chanting, "Hey, hey, UVA who will you exploit today" and "No Nazis, no KKK, no fascist U.S.".

Many local residents also made a point of coming downtown to mark the anniversary. "I certainly predict that they will be much more professional and much more even-handed and do much more to contribute to safety", he said.

"It's nice that they're here to protect us", said Lara Mitchell, 66, who works at a shop selling artwork, jewelry, and other items. "It feels good that they're here in front of our store".

After last year's protests, debates erupted on whether or not Confederate monuments should be removed.

Any response from Trump to this year's demonstrations could have consequences as Democrats look to harness outrage for electoral gains.

Last year, on August 12, hundreds of white nationalists - including neo-Nazis, skinheads and Ku Klux Klan members - descended on Charlottesville in part to protest the city's decision chose to remove a monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park. Participants plan to march from Washington's Foggy Bottom neighborhood to Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House. Government and police officials in Washington have expressed confidence the city can manage the events without violence; the mayor and police chief have promised a massive security mobilization to keep protesters and counter-protesters apart. Thirty-two-year-old counter-protester Heather Heyer was killed by self-described white supremacist James Alex Fields Jr., who rammed a vehicle into a crowd at high speed. Two Virginia State Police troopers also died that weekend when their helicopter, assisting with public safety, crashed during the rally.
