No Joke: Tsitsipas upsets Djokovic to reach Rogers Cup quarter-finals

Nadal routs Paire to reach third round in Toronto

Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece celebrates on his way to defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia during Rogers Cup tennis tournament action in Toronto on Thursday August 9, 2018.

Tsitsipas, ranked 27, spent just over two hours in advancing to the first Masters 1000 quarter-final of his career.

Four-time champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday, beating Canadian wild-card Peter Polansky 6-3, 6-4. But as I said, I didn't feel the ball at all.

"I thought Tsitsipas played very well and he deserved to win without a doubt", Djokovic said. "I'm pretty sure I'm making my family proud, all of those people that are watching, my coach, my father. I've never felt so many emotions after a victory".

Djokovic faded late against his flashy opponent, who played with poise and power on a warm, breezy afternoon at Aviva Centre.

"Sorry to my fans in Toronto, but I have to pull out of the tournament since my left wrist needs some days of rest", Del Potro said in a tweet. It really frustrates me. Maybe if I played Chung it could be a little bit just having the home crowd support.

"The early break in the third set was everything". An easy forehand. I missed it, but that's sport.

Djokovic, coming off his fourth Wimbledon title last month, had seven aces and never faced a break point in the 1-hour, 25-minute match.

"I was waiting and I grabbed him like a bulldog and I stuck there", Tsitsipas said. "I knew that at some point he's going to break, and I just patiently waited for this moment and it happened".

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal battled past an improving Stan Wawrinka 7-5 7-6 (7/4).

World number one Nadal has won the Canadian Open three times and will face Croat giant Marin Cilic for a place in the semi-finals. "To be on the same side of the net was great, and I enjoyed it very much so".

Eighth-seeded John Isner, the American who won at Atlanta two weeks ago, beat France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Second-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany, the victor last week in Washington, beat American Bradley Klahn 6-4, 6-4, and fourth-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa edged Russia's Evgeny Donskoy 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (0). "I get into a rhythm of playing matches one after another, and right now, I'm in that rhythm".

Milos Raonic of Canada was scheduled to follow Djokovic's win on center court, but that match was delayed by rain.

In the doubles quarterfinals, the top-seeded duo of Austria's Oliver Marach and Croatia's Mate Pavic edged Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands and Romania's Horia Tecau 6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-6.
