The West Nile Virus has killed two people in Greece

Individuals from Newington and Fairfield are the first two human cases of the West Nile Virus this year, the state Department of Public Health reported Friday.

Cases of the West Nile virus have also been reported this year in Hungary, Romania and Serbia, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. A total of 106 cases of human infection have been confirmed thus far. CTDPH and the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) will continue to monitor the status of WNV through surveillance, trapping and testing.

West Nile virus is a relatively common disease; Cabell County also confirmed cases in 2017 and 2015.

Humans with WNV and other mosquito-borne diseases often have symptoms of high fever, severe headache, nausea, stiff neck, confusion, muscle weakness, paralysis, disorientation, and seizures that are severe enough to require medical attention, Dr. Eichold said.

The majority of people infected with West Nile will only exhibit mild symptoms, if any at all.

"The identification of two CT residents with West Nile virus associated illness that required hospitalization underscores the potential seriousness of infection", said DPH Commissioner Dr. Raul Pino in a statement. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label.

Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs.

"This is the first direct evidence of West Nile activity in our area this summer", reads the release.

When outdoors, wear long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt and socks.

When using DEET, use the lowest concentration effective for the time spent outdoors (for example, 6 percent lasts approximately two hours and 20 percent for four hours) and wash treated skin when returning indoors.

"Make sure to fix or install window and door screens to keep mosquitoes from entering your home".
