President Trump today said he condemned "all types of racism" a year after his response to deadly clashes in Charlottesville drew widespread criticism. We must come together as a nation, ' he wrote on Saturday morning. Police at last year's event were criticized for being caught off guard by the violence, failing to keep feuding groups apart and not reacting quickly enough as fights broke out.

On Sunday, thousands of counter-protesters are slated to attend multiple rallies against white supremacy in Washington, DC.

A counterprotester who faced down a group of white supremacists that marched through the University of Virginia's campus previous year says she's angry at the police response to a student rally on campus marking the anniversary.

Last year, on August 12, hundreds of white nationalists - including neo-Nazis, skinheads and Ku Klux Klan members - descended on Charlottesville in part to protest the city's decision chose to remove a monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park.

His apparent refusal to condemn neo-Nazis and violent white nationalist groups elicited strong bipartisan pushback.

Saturday marks one year since a group of white nationalists descended on the University of Virginia's campus.

As protesters took to UVA's Grounds Saturday evening, members of the community reflected on the leadership of the school's administration, saying this year's events were much more peaceful than those of last August, but they have still left Charlottesville in a state of unrest.

Officials declared states of emergency for both the city of Charlottesville and the state of Virginia to help law enforcement mobilize state and local resources for security reasons.

"You had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides", Trump had said. "I have to stand up for myself, I have to stand up for my young guns (employees) and any other black person who can't".

Hundreds of students and activists took to the streets on Saturday evening, as a rally planned for the University of Virginia campus turned into a march through the city.

"I think 400 is optimistic but we'll see", he said told NewsHour, after reading Kessler's permit application.

Congressman Tom Garrett, R. -Va., on Saturday said Russian Federation is to blame for some of the hate spewed from last year's rally.

The violence culminated when a man plowed his auto into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing a woman named Heather Heyer and injuring 19.

The "Unite the Right 2" rally is being billed as a "white civil rights rally" meant to protest "civil rights abuse in Charlottesville". Two Virginia State Police troopers also died that weekend when their helicopter, assisting with public safety, crashed during the rally.

Several events are scheduled in Charlottesville to observe what happened past year and promote racial healing. Kessler initially wanted to return to Charlottesville, but the city denied his request, so he headed to the nation's capital.

Trump on Friday jumped on anthem protests by some black players at National Football League preseason games by tweeting that they "wanted to show their "outrage" at something that majority are unable to define". "We want to be in the streets before they get there".
