The NHC at 11 a.m. on September 12 has issued warnings for Tropical Storm Isaac, which is still moving west about 420 miles east of the island of Martinique.
Tropical storm warnings were in effect for Martinique, Dominica and Guadeloupe, while watches were in effect for Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua, and Saba and St. Eustatius.
Florence, however, continues to threaten the east coast as a fierce storm that could trigger flooding as far south as Georgia.
"A life-threatening storm surge is highly likely along portions of the coastline of SC and North Carolina, and a Storm Surge Warning is in effect for a portion of this area", the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday.
Tropical Storm Isaac made its closest approach to St. Croix Thursday night, passing nearly 200 miles to the south and having no apparent impact on the territory as it made its leisurely way across the Caribbean.
Isaac was moving west Wednesday afternoon at a speed of nearly 17 miles per hour.
Gradual weakening is forecast during the next 72 hours.
The mammoth waves were spotted early Wednesday in the storm's northeast quadrant, said the NHC's Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch, which has been documenting Florence's waves all week.
Isaac is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of two to four inches with isolated amounts up eight inches across Martinique, Dominica, and Guadeloupe, one to two inches with isolated amounts to four inches across Puerto Rico and the southern United States Virgin Islands, with up to an inch anticipated across the remaining Windward and Leeward Islands.
Swells generated by Isaac are affecting portions of the Lesser Antilles.
Isaac was a hurricane Sunday night but downgraded when maximum sustained winds fell below 74 miles per hour.
Forecasters said Isaac could bring as many as 10 inches of rain to some locations, 2 to 4 feet of storm surge, and life-threatening surf conditions.
