The Mexican boxing star was given a surprisingly short six month ban from the Nevada State Athletic Commission which allows the rematch to take place this weekend.
A fight that had to happen after the disputed draw in the first bout nearly didn't come to be after Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol just before beginning training for what was supposed to be a May rematch. You wouldn't have known his boxing legacy is on the line Saturday night when he faces Gennady "Triple-G" Golovkin in a rematch for the middleweight championship.
Golovkin is a -145 favorite, with the price on Alvarez down to +125 at some sportsbooks.
Now, after a manic and frenetic weigh-in on Friday night, it appears some of those words and emotions may just have bubbled over slightly, with both fighters being pictured exchanging words with one another as they went face-to-face for the final time before the fight. The 160-pound titles are at stake once again as the two fighters try to settle what they couldn't in last September's draw.
Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 knockouts) believes that, too, but sees a different result.
"These stories about contaminated meat are nonsense", Golovkin said, claiming to have seen injection marks on Alvarez's body in photos of his opponent.
"He's promised the fans he's going to knock him out, but in order to do that you have to be in range", Sanchez said.
Scores of 114-114 and 115-113 in Golovkin's favour appeared to fairly reflect the narrow margin between the two men - but ringside judge Adelaide Byrd's freakish scorecard, ruling in favour of Canelo by 118-110, left many observers baffled. That means both fighters will need to take more chances than in the first bout, which was close and entertaining but had no dramatic knockdowns or memorable big punches.
The fight last fall ended in a swirl of controversy after judge Dave Moretti scored it 115-113 for Golovkin; while Don Trella saw it a 114-114 and Adelaide Byrd favored Alvarez 118-110.
Haye went on to mention that the main reason the fight is happening is because of money.
The Golovkin camp has been relentless in chastising Alvarez for the failed test and postponement of the rematch.
But both fighters say they are happy with the judges for the rematch, and doubt they will come into play anyway. "I know it's going to be a tough fight". "It's a real fight, a real war".
Golovkin said when Alvarez and his team approached him, "All I could feel was fear from them, and I think they did it so I couldn't look into his eyes and he couldn't look into mine".
"The error I made was there were some spots in the first fight where he was vulnerable and I didn't take advantage".
