Canelo v GGG II The big-fight debate By Dom Farrell
15 September 2018 187
Their first meeting nearly exactly a year ago was similarly close, although on that occasion the fight ended in a draw. There were no knockdowns, but the action was spirited throughout as the two battled to the final bell before a frenzied crowd at the T-Mobile Arena.
Judge Glenn Feldman had it 114-114, the same as Yahoo Sports. The AP scored it 114-114.
Unfortunately tonight's rematch didn't deliver a decisive victor, but it did give fight fans one of the greatest boxing matches in the history of the sport.
Victory was sweet for Alvarez, who had been accused of "running" during last year's first encounter by Golovkin's camp. Things picked up after as Canelo let his hands go off the counters in round two, Golovkin stalked behind the jab.
There was plenty of enthusiasm heading into last September's fight between Canelo and GGG, which included some memorable moments and flurry of punches.
But Golovkin was never able to press home his advantage, and each time Alvarez was able to evade the looming danger to slide away and respond with blows of his own.
"I'm not going to say who won tonight, because the victory belongs to Canelo according to the judges", the deposed WBA, WBC and IBO middleweight king said. I thought it was a very good fight for the fans, and very exciting.
LA Lakers basketball player LeBron James: "One of the best fights I've ever seen!"
Ringside punch stats showed a close fight, though they favored Golovkin by a small margin.
Now that Alvarez and Golovkin are 1-1, who's ready for the inevitable third and final fight? "Need one more between these great fighters".
A great boxing fight was just ruined by a bogus decision by the judges ... again. "Hopefully there'll be a third fight".
"We had a great fight, the one we expected the first time around", said Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez. "For now I'm going to enjoy it with my family".
Said Golovkin: "I feel like I'm a champion, but he's also a champion".
"We were controlling the fight". The eighth round saw Canelo bleeding above the cut as Golovkin began to close the gap.
'Some very close rounds that could have gone either way.
It took the judges to split the pair once more, with the Mexican Alvarez getting the decision. "It was a clear victory". Both fighters dug deep for the so-called championship rounds but Golovkin seemed to have the edge.
