Donald Trump's conservative US Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh denies allegation of sexual misconduct...
In a statement released to U.S. media, Kavanaugh rejected the woman's claim, made in a letter to the Democrats vetting his nomination, that he tried to force himself on her during a party.
Kennedy said on "Fox News Sunday" that the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings have devolved into an "intergalactic freakshow". "I did not do this back in high school or at any time", Kavanaugh said in a statement.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, is pushing ahead with plans for a committee vote on Kavanaugh's nomination next Thursday. If approved by the committee and the whole Senate, as expected, Kavanaugh is likely to decidedly tilt the court to the conservatives for years to come.
Feinstein stunned her colleagues earlier this week by disclosing a letter she sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding Kavanaugh's confirmation.
On Thursday, Feinstein said she had received "information" regarding Kavanaugh and has passed it on to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The allegation was made in a letter by a woman who said the incident took place in high school.
The newspaper notes they do not mention Kavanaugh by name but say she was attacked by students "from an elitist boys" school" who went on to become "highly respected and high-ranking members of society in Washington'. She said she escaped after Kavanaugh's friend entered the room and jumped on top of both of them. But fairness and journalistic integrity took a hit with The New York Times' publication of the op-ed.
Kavanaugh was quickly defended by friends and acquaintances from the time who cast doubts on the alleged incident.
John Kennedy blasted Democrats for turning confirmation hearings for Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh into an "intergalactic freak show".
Ronan Farrow, who co-authored The New Yorker article, told CNN that some members of the Senate Judiciary Committee "feel that there was a missed opportunity to fully interrogate this allegation".
The White House called Feinstein's move an "11th hour attempt to delay his confirmation". A spokesperson added, "we included it as part of Judge Kavanaugh's background file, as per the standard process". The late entrance of the letter to the Kavanaugh pre-confirmation hearings drew cries of foul play from Kavanaugh, who denied the allegations, and his supporters. She said a reporter from Buzzfeed approached her outside her college classroom and another reporter was calling her colleagues. Ginsburg was confirmed in two months by a vote of 96-to-3. Every other Republican in the Senate is expected to vote yes - and some Democrats from Trump-won states may join them - though it remains to be seen if the misconduct allegation will cost him any support.
A spokeswoman for Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., declined to confirm reports that the congresswoman had forwarded a letter containing the allegations to Feinstein.
Hill said in a statement to Politico, "The reluctance of someone to come forward demonstrates that even in the #MeToo era, it remains incredibly hard to report harassment, abuse or assault by people in power".
