Texas surf park closes after man dies from rare 'brain-eating amoeba'

The BSR Surf Resort voluntarily closed down its wave pool after a surfer infected with Naegleria fowleri died since visiting the park. CDC is working to determine the source of the amoeba

The move came following the death of New Jersey surfer Fabrizio "Fab" Stabile, who had reportedly been in the wave pool prior to his death from the disease earlier this month at the age of 29.

The surf park where Stabile is suspected to have contracted the infection.

Stabile died at the Atlantic City Medical Center in New Jersey on September 21, days after returning home from Texas, reported.

The amoeba is typically found in fresh water, especially warmer water such as lakes, rivers and hot springs.

He is believed to have contracted Naegleria fowleri during a visit to the BSR Cable Park in Waco, Texas, where he swam in the wave pool.

CDC crews collected water samples, trying to find the source of the contamination.

Fabrizio Stabile, 29 died just one day after he was diagnosed with Naegleria fowleri, according to a GoFundMe page created by his family.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reports Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is testing at BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort, which voluntarily closed on Friday.

But the infection is very rare, and according to the CDC, there have been about 35 cases reported in the the last decade.

The infection, which can cause a deadly infection called primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, usually occurs when contaminated water enters a person's nose, the CDC said. We are in compliance with the CDC guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri'.

Naegleria fowleri infections are rare.

The surf resort has been closed pending the test results from the CDC, he said.

The disease, according to the CDC, is nearly always fatal, with only four people out of 143 cases have survived the infection.
