She went on to receive her first degree in the field of physics in 1981, graduating from McMaster University. Advanced precision instruments are opening up unexplored areas of research and a multitude of industrial and medical applications, according to a statement released by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
The Nobel prizes have always been dominated by male scientists and none more so than physics.
"We needed a new way to create the peak power of laser pulses", said Michael Moloney, chief executive officer of the group.
A Canadian scientist who became only the third woman to win the Nobel Prize for Physics said her personal triumph doubles as a sign of progress for her male-dominated industry. Arthur Ashkin, the American who developed "optical tweezers", became the oldest Nobel Prize laureate at age 96. The economics victor in 2012, Lloyd Shapley, was 89.
Goeppert-Mayer, whose work was cited in Strickland's own award-winning efforts, went largely unpaid throughout her career.
The oldest winners of the prizes established by the will were 88 - Doris Lessing for literature and Raymond Davis for physics.
"It is also a personal delight to see Dr. Strickland break the 55-year hiatus since a woman has been awarded a Nobel Prize in physics, making this year's award all the more historic", he said. "We did seem to be on the cutting edge of laser science, and I think we were all aware of that", she says.
He was found guilty of one rape but was acquitted of the other because the victim said she was asleep at the time and judges said her account was not reliable.
"We are obviously disappointed", Arnault's lawyer, Bjorn Hurtig told TT. "And hopefully in time, it'll start to move forward at a faster rate", Strickland said in a phone call with the academy after the prize announcement.
Asked what her first reaction to the news was, Strickland told the press conference announcing the prize, "First of all, you have to think it's insane, so that was my first thought".
Polish-born physicist Marie Curie shared the 1903 award with her husband Pierre Curie and Antoine Henri Becquerel for their research into radioactivity.
Three scientists from the United States, France and Canada have been awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for advances in laser physics.
Arthur Ashkin of Bell Laboratories in the United States won half of the prize for inventing "optical tweezers" while Frenchman Gerard Mourou, who also has USA citizenship and Canada's Donna Strickland shared the other half for work on high-intensity lasers.
Strickland and Mourou also share the prize with Arthur Ashkin, who invented "optical tweezers that grab particles, atoms, viruses and other living cells with their laser beam fingers".
