Microsoft puts Windows 10 update on hold after file deletion reports

Microsoft can recover lost files Windows 10 October 2018 Update - But You Need To Call Them

"To help us better detect issues like this, today we have enabled a new feature in the Windows Insider Feedback Hub", stated the blog post.

Microsoft is now testing an updated version of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update that promises to fix a serious issue that led the company to pull the update following its public release last week. Microsoft announced on its support page that it has paused the distribution of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all the users after isolates report of users missing some files after updating. Now, Microsoft has fixed the problem and explained what happened. You want to save some files separate from your primary folder, so you add another drive to your system for these. At the time the bug was discovered, the October 2018 Update was only being offered to users who had manually clicked the "Check for updates" button within Windows settings, which Microsoft credits with helping to minimize its impact. However, it appears to affect files from Documents, Pictures, and other folders. Based on feedback from users, we introduced code in the October 2018 Update to remove these empty, duplicate known folders.

The feature is built-in to the Windows operating system.

Microsoft has also changed the workaround text on its website.

Dona Sarkar, engineering leader of the Windows Insider Program has tweeted that Microsoft is able to restore the removed files. While we can not guarantee the outcome of any file recovery work, if you have manually checked for updates and believe you have an issue with missing files, please minimize your use of the affected device and contact us directly at +1-800-MICROSOFT or find a local number in your area. Microsoft is working with them to recover the lost files, but it isn't offering any guarantees that their data will get restored. Previously the company only advised users to not install the update.

For those who have already been impacted by the issue, Microsoft continues to recommend you contact their support line or bring your PC into a nearby Microsoft Store for servicing. It notes that Microsoft will provide a notice when the Windows 10 version 1809 rollout resumes.
