James Gunn to write Suicide Squad 2, possibly direct

James Gunn to Write & Possibly Direct New Suicide Squad Movie

Gunn directed the first two "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies, but was sacked from the franchise this summer due to the re-emergence of old, offensive tweets.

In a sudden twist, former Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer and director James Gunn will be taking over another franchise for Marvel Studios rivals DC Comics and Warner Bros.

A series of tweets were found from before Gunn began as director on Guardians Of The Galaxy, which made light of subjects like paedophilia and rape. The film was previously going to be written and directed by Gavin O'Connor, but he has since moved on to other projects.

Marvel's loss might end up being DC's gain.

Warner Bros. confirmed that Gunn will write the script to the studio's next instalment of Suicide Squad, the DC supervillain team-up franchise. Suicide Squad is beyond rehabilitation-there was so much wrong with it that no sequel could possibly work under any circumstance.

Ayer is likely preoccupied working on Bright 2, which follows up the Netflix feature film starring Suicide Squad veteran Will Smith. That means it's no longer a possibility, but Gunn has indeed signed on to write the next Suicide Squad movie.

The director was sacked from the Disney franchise of films after tweets from years ago saw revealed jokes in poor taste, concerning rape and pedophilia - since then, Gunn has apologised and said he had grown as a person in the years since the jokes.

James Gunn issued a statement (via Hollywood Reporter) at the time, saying: 'My words of almost a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative.

Warner Bros. and representatives for Gunn did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
