Tropical Storm Michael is strengthening, likely becomes a hurricane today
10 October 2018, 04:32 | Devin Moran
Potential Tropical Cyclone Could Hit The US This Week
After landfall, Michael is expected to weaken as it tracks quickly northeast, and the forecast track brings the center across southeast Georgia and southeast SC in the Wednesday night and Thursday time period.
Tropical storm force winds are possible as early as Wednesday. The fix bill came in at more than $60 billion, ranking Irma among the most costly storms in US history.
Satellite-derived wind data indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 35 miles per hour (55 km/h) with higher gusts.
"You cannot hide from storm surge, so get prepared and get out if evacuations are ordered".
Michael is the 13th named storm of the 2018 hurricane season, according to hurricane center spokesman Dennis Feltgen.
Michael is forecast to become a hurricane on Monday night or Tuesday and approach the U.S. Gulf Coast on Wednesday, making landfall along Florida's northern Panhandle region, the NHC said. The hurricane center said the storm could produce rain accumulations of 2 to 4 inches across the Florida Keys through Monday and could become a hurricane by Monday night or Tuesday. On the forecast track, the center of Michael will move northward near the western tip of Cuba this afternoon and into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by tonight.
Michael was moving north-northeast at 3 miles per hour off Yucatan Peninsula as of the 5 p.m. Sunday update.
Today's forecast for Palm Beach County includes a 20 to 30 percent chance of rain with highs in the upper 80s.
"This storm will be life-threatening and extremely unsafe", Scott said in a briefing Sunday.
Michael, now a Category 1 hurricane slashing Cuba, is forecast to be a "dangerous major hurricane" when it smacks the US Gulf Coast on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said. As a result the first warnings for storm surge have also been released.
Storm and storm surge watches were issued for the Gulf Coast from the Mississippi-Alabama border to Chassahowitzka, Florida, north of Tampa Bay.
Just off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday, Michael had sustained winds of 60 mph and was about 105 miles east-southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, moving north at 5 mph. Before reaching the Gulf of Mexico, the storm will bring a threat of flooding rain around the northwestern Caribbean. In Georgia, Gov. Nathan Deal declared a preemptive state of emergency for 92 counties.
In North Carolina, still reeling from the destruction of Hurricane Florence last month, Gov. Roy Cooper warned that Michael could bring moderate storm surge, downed trees and power outages to his sodden state.
