After 8 seasons, how many more ways can you kill a zombie anyway?
Just last month, CBS brass woke up to find the network's long-running powerhouse comedy The Big Bang Theory had lost 40 percent of its under-50 audience versus its previous season premiere, while companion series Young Sheldon dove 55 percent from its heavily hyped series opener.
Shifting gears on both sides of the camera for its ninth season with a new showrunner and the upcoming exit of leads Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan, The Walking Dead took a ratings hit and rise Sunday. The Hollywood Reporterreports that the premiere achieved a 2.5 rating among adults ranging from 18-49. The Season Eight premiere boasted larger numbers, as well, posting 11.4 million live viewers and 6.5 million in the key demographic. Do the math and that's an all time season opener low., down 7% from the Season 1 debut.
This season's premiere is also flirting with a tie for the series low in the key demo, which was a 2.4 set back during Season 1. TL;DR: The number of people watching The Walking Dead Season 9 is almost back to the number of people who watched the show in Season 1, when it was first getting off the ground. Additionally, while its former status as top-rated series on Sundays was yielded to NBC's This is Us, it's still a close contest, since that show barely bested TWD with a 2.7 rating. The Live+3 and Live+7 numbers will provide a fuller portrait of how the premiere actually did. AMC doesn't release numbers for the streaming service, though, so we don't know for sure how many people watched it there.
Weeks after Telltale Games announced it would be laying off a majority of its staff, another studio has revealed that it will be finishing the final season of Telltale'sThe Walking Dead adventure game series.
