Met Office Issues Yellow Rain Warnings As Storm Callum Approaches
11 October 2018, 09:56 | Devin Moran
Traffic tries to navigate floods on the Castlebar to Belmullet road in Co Mayo yesterday
The zone of heavy rain affecting England and Wales on Friday is then expected to move slowly northwards on Saturday, when a further yellow weather warning is in place.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for parts of the United Kingdom on Friday and Saturday. Quite widely 40 - 80mm rainfall is possible, but locally 160mm could fall on the highest ground.
The orange warning is in palce for 13 counties Meath, Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Kerry, Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, and Waterford and will stay in place from 10 pm tomorrow (Thursday) until 12pm on Friday. There will be rain as well later in the night and combined with the stormy winds and high tides, coastal flooding is likely.
The Met Office said that "leaves and twigs, brought down by the wind, could block drains and culverts, increasing the likelihood of flooding".
Authorities warn of travel being disrupted as bridges close and some public transport being cut.
"Preparations are well underway to ensure we have engineers and equipment and customer care teams on hand to respond to faults should they come in".
However, it is Friday (October 12) which will see the full force of Storm Callum.
Coats on the south and west of the country are expected to be the worst affected by the storm, worth risks of heavy flooding and structural damage.
Natural Resources Wales' (NRW) have said they are sending out their emergency response teams to prepare for the storm, checking that flood defences are in good working order, clearing gulleys and ditches, and installing temporary defences. "There could be localised flooding issues".
"We are advising people to avoid coastal areas during this event". Even though the high winds will be the main concern, a spell of heavy and possibly thundery rain will occur too, making for an extremely windy and wet start, with squally conditions associated with the secondary cold front as it tracks north-eastwards up across the country.
Where flooding may occur there is a chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services.
