Michael looks likely to provide extra moisture to an incoming fall system late this week
"It is critical that you listen to local news for reports and warnings from local and state officials as Hurricane Michael approaches". Rescuers searched for survivors on Friday after one of the most powerful hurricanes in USA history slammed into the Florida Panhandle and killed at least seven people. Michael flattened homes, plunged communities into darkness and ravaged whole neighborhoods. "And the damage left in its wake is still yet to be fully understood".
Michael is not a spent force.
At 5am (0900 GMT) today, Michael was over the Atlantic east of Virginia and moving away from the U.S. coast at the rapid clip of 29 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Centre said.
Fast-moving Michael, a Category 4 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale when it came ashore, was about 20 miles (35 km) northwest of Raleigh, North Carolina, at 5 pm EDT (1900 GMT) and set to speed up as it headed for the Atlantic coast, the NHC said.
"It's total devastation - no power, no water, no communication", she said.
The storm - now located over the Gulf of Mexico - is sweeping toward the Florida coast at around 12 miles per hour and is expected to make landfall on Wednesday, bringing with it "life threatening" storm surges and heavy rainfall, the National Hurricane Center said.
Tropical storm-force winds are expected to be in the area as soon as Tuesday night.
Nearly 1.1 million homes and businesses were without power from Florida to Virginia early on Friday, according to utility companies.
The damage could be particularly severe for the Carolinas, which are still cleaning up from Hurricane Florence.
Rescuers from FEMA used dogs, drones and Global Positioning System in the search for survivors.
It appeared to be so powerful that it remained a hurricane as it moved into south Georgia early Thursday. I didn't even take the boards off my window.
That brings the total number of USA deaths related to the storm to at least 11. NBC affiliate WCNC of Charlotte reported that the death happened Thursday on Mocksville Highway in the town of Chambersburg.
Gov. Roy Cooper said in a press conference this morning that the state's problems following Hurricane Florence could be compounded by Michael because some rivers are still elevated.
A Virginia man was found dead after getting swept away from his vehicle in Pittsylvania County, state police said Friday.
The core of the storm was expected to crash ashore around midday Wednesday near Panama City Beach, along a lightly populated stretch of fishing villages and white-sand spring-break beaches. The hurricane damaged hospitals and nursing homes in Panama City, and officials worked to evacuate hundreds of patients. Scott, meanwhile, said 20 people were rescued uninjured from Mexico Beach overnight.
She said authorities got a call Wednesday evening that the man was trapped but rescue crews were hampered by downed trees and debris blocking roadways. I don't know where they are. Northeast, in Tallahassee, many more roads were closed, and 90 percent of the city was without power.
Scientists say global warming is responsible for more intense and more frequent extreme weather, such as storms, droughts, floods and fires.
The president told reporters that those affected by the storm were in his prayers, and he said the administration "will not rest or waver" until recovery was complete. "We urge you to immediately approve this request to ensure that all federal resources are made available", the letter declares. His office said he would tour the devastated areas next week.
Homes destroyed by Hurricane Michael are shown in this aerial photo Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, in Mexico Beach, Fla. Houses - what was left of them - littered the street. "Houses that have been there forever are just shattered".

They will also require considerable political engagement globally, as will reducing the amount of carbon being emitted. Clearly, that deceivingly small half-degree difference has the potential to bring about significantly worse effects.
