Google Shutting Down Google+ After Privacy Breach Affecting Up To 500,000 Users

Google Shutters Google+ Following Privacy Vulnerability

Google exposed personal data of almost 500,000 and didn't disclose it

According to a report published Monday by The Wall Street Journal, the vulnerability wasn't disclosed because Google didn't want to be subjected to regulatory scrutiny from lawmakers.

This data is limited to static, optional Google+ Profile fields including name, email address, occupation, gender and age. It said it had no evidence that any third-party developer was aware of the bug or had misused profile data. The company found no evidence the information was misused by any developers, Smith said.

Google responded by shutting down Google+ by next August, pulling the plug on a social network that it launched in 2011, in response to Facebook, but is widely regarded as a flop.

Google makes user data available to app developers through more than 130 different public channels known as application programming interfaces, or APIs.

"It's important for consumers to realise that connecting apps in social media platforms only increases the amount of valuable information that could potentially be breached, as well as increased attack vectors that hackers can leverage".

The WSJ reported that the exposure dates back to 2015, although the company didn't comment on how long information was exposed.

The Google+ data leak bug was found as part of "Project Strobe", a root-and-branch review of what data developers could access from Google accounts, and Android devices. Third-party SMS apps will still be allowed, but they can only access this data if the user sets the app as their default for text messaging.

The tech giant announced the news on the company blog, disclosing the compromised user-privacy issue for the first time, despite knowing about it for seven months.

Google will shut down Google Plus, the company's floundering answer to Facebook, after it discovered a security vulnerability that exposed the private data of up to 500,000 users of the service.

One of the changes that Google is making to help give users even more control over their data is more in-depth permission dialog boxes.

The review did highlight the significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers' expectations.

The company also admitted the low engagement statistics of Google+.
