The Times reports there's no evidence Gates acted on Psy-Group's proposals.
Campaign official Rick Gates reportedly requested information on how to create fake online personas, engage in social media manipulation, and gather information online to help Trump defeat his Republican primary opponents and eventually, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. A third proposal describes a long-term plan to use social media to expose divides in rival campaigns. "Though the Israeli company's pitches were narrower than Moscow's interference campaign and appear unconnected, the documents show that a senior Trump aide saw the promise of a disruption effort to swing voters in Mr. Trump's favor", the New York Times says. Cruz, at the time, was the only person standing between Donald Trump and the Republican nomination.
Psy-Group created several secretive proposals for the Trump campaign at the behest of Rick Gates, who has since pleaded guilty and offered to cooperate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into foreign meddling in the U.S. election, The New York Times reported. The company is staffed by former Israeli intelligence officials.
Another proposal offered opposition research about Hillary Clinton and people close to her. Trump was nicknamed "Lion", for example, while Clinton was referred to as "Forest", according to the documents.
While Gates ultimately rejected the proposals, according to the Monday report, Psy-Group head Joel Zamel apparently outlined the idea to Trump's son Donald Trump Jr.at a August 3, 2016 meeting at Trump Tower in Manhattan.
The special counsel's office indicted Manafort and Gates past year on multiple charges of financial fraud and tax evasion.
Former Psy-Group employees said that, in anticipation of the Trump Tower meeting, Zamel asked them to prepare an updated version of the third proposal.
One proposal involved using fake social media accounts to sway delegates for Sen.
The August 3 Trump Tower meeting is a focus of the ongoing investigation by Robert Mueller, the special counsel, who was tasked previous year with examining possible cooperation and coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation in the lead-up to the election.
The reason for the payment has been of keen interest to Mueller, according to people familiar with the matter.
