A magnitude 6.4 quake struck the northeastern coast of East Java shortly before 3am, with local news reports stating three people have been killed by collapsing buildings.

The latest tremor was recorded at a latitude of 4.9 degrees south and a longitude of 151.75 degrees east, with a depth of 80 km, reported the center.

In March, a magnitude-6.6 quake struck nearby but no casualties or damage was reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially warned hazardous tsunami waves were possible in coastal areas 300km from the epicentre.

But scientists don't have any tide gauges close to the where the natural disaster happened, so are unable to say at this point whether tsunamis have been generated. At least two aftershocks with a magnitude greater than 5 shortly followed.

Tremors were felt in the neighbouring regions, while an aftershock measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was felt at the islands at 11:14 am (local time), according to the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismological station.

PNG sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. He had killed at least 125 people, and cut off from the world some of the mountain villages.

The quake occurred in the Bali Sea located between the islands of Bali and Java. It caused massive panic and even prompted some residents to left the capital of Bali, Densapar.

Hours later, a magnitude 6.3 quake was reported on the northeast side of the island.

The quake hit about 200km (125 miles) southwest of the town of Rabaul at a depth of nearly 40km, just before 7 am local time (2100 GMT Wednesday).
