Michael Bloomberg may run for President in 2020

Michael Bloomberg re-registers as Democrat ahead of possible run for White House

Former New York Mayor and America's 10th richest man Michael Bloomberg says he has registered as a Democrat - 11 years after leaving the Republican party in 2007.

On Wednesday morning he posted a photo on Instagram of him signing the paperwork, with a caption that reads, "At key points in United States history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution".

Bloomberg flirted with the possibility of running as an independent candidate in the 2016 election, though he ultimately chose to back Hillary Clinton instead when she ran against Donald Trump.

Bloomberg, who was elected mayor as a Republican and an Independent, has been toying with the idea of running for president in 2020 as a Democrat.

The change in party affiliation comes after Bloomberg chose to spend millions in the 2018 election to help elect Democrats.

That's the party he belonged to most of his life before switching to the Republican party to run for mayor. "Two years ago at the Democratic Convention, I warned of those threats", Bloomberg wrote in an Instagram post.

In June, Bloomberg reportedly said at a fundraiser that he's "revving up" for 2020.

This isn't his first rodeo, either, as he considered running as an Independent both in 2008 and 2016. "I believe that the Republicans have not done what they should have done in terms of providing some counterbalance to the executive branch". His advisers told the Washington Post this month, amid the contentious fight over the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, that he would spend an additional $20 million to help Democrats retake the U.S. Senate. According to the New York Times, he's approved allocating at least $80 million, with the bulk supporting the Democratic campaign to take control of the U.S. House.
