Former Arsenal, Barcelona and France forward Thierry Henry is set to become the new Monaco manager.

Henry has signed a three-year deal with Monaco and spoke of his delight at the move this morning.

The appointment was announced via Monaco's social media on Saturday, with Henry rewarded for his work as an assistant with the Belgian national team, who finished third at the 2018 World Cup.

The 41-year-old former French striker took up his new job just 2 days after Leonardo Jardim was sacked following a poor start to the season.

"I would like to thank the Belgium federation, Roberto, all the staff and players for making a Frenchman feel so welcome amongst all of you Red Devils!"

The 41-year-old World Cup victor had been linked with the job at Aston Villa, but turned it down earlier this week before Dean Smith then took over at Villa Park.

Thierry Henry became a key player for Arsenal under manager Arsene Wenger (right). Henry, who began his professional football career with Monaco, will be joined by Arsenal's Under-18 head coach Kwame Ampadu at Stade Louis II.

I am very happy to come back to AS Monaco and extremely determined to meet the challenges ahead. I cannot wait to meet the players to start working together'.

His first game in charge for Monaco, who are now languishing in 18th place, will be a visit to Strasbourg in Ligue 1 next Saturday night, before a trip to Bruges in the Champions League four days later. He won seven trophies with the Gunners, among them two Premier Leagues, including the unbeaten 2003-04 side.

Vadim Vasilyev, Monaco's chief executive, added: 'His knowledge of football, his passion for the game, his high standards and his commitment to our colors make his nomination a reality.

Henry had worked alongside former Everton boss Roberto Martinez in the Belgium set-up, and helped the side to a third-placed finish at the World Cup in Russian Federation.
