A Drug-Resistant Salmonella Outbreak Has Been Reported in 29 States–Here's What to Know

Raw chicken causing Salmonella outbreak in Pennsylvania and 28 states

Salmonella from raw chicken has made 92 people sick across 29 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday.

The CDC has not pinpointed the common supplier at this time.

Across the country, 92 people have gotten sick, including 21 people who have been hospitalized. The strain was identified in samples taken from raw chicken pet food, raw chicken products and live chickens.

Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can be more severe.

The CDC has called the rise in infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria "a global threat", saying at least 23,000 people die yearly and 2 million become infected in the US alone.

Five cases of multi-drug resistant salmonella infantis illness has reported by the Illinois Dept. of Public Health.

"The outbreak strain of Salmonella was found in live chickens and in many types of raw chicken products, indicating it might be widespread in the chicken industry", the CDC said in a statement.

See your healthcare provider if you are concerned about symptoms, such as a high fever (temperature over 101.5˚F), blood in your poop, diarrhea, or frequent vomiting that prevents keeping liquid down.

This outbreak is a reminder to follow food safety guidelines.

Health officials say the outbreak should serve as a reminder to always cook raw chicken carefully and thoroughly, as it may contain germs can that spread around food prep areas and make people sick.

The good news is that all chicken is safe to eat once it has been thoroughly cooked. Wipe down surfaces that have come into contact with raw meat, and use a separate cutting board. The CDC does recommend pet owners not feed raw chicken to their animals.
