Once they split from an ice shelf, they are often geometric in shape.

The picture was snapped on October 16 by scientists working with Operation IceBridge - a NASA mission that monitors the ways polar regions are responding to climate change.

"The iceberg's sharp angles and flat surface indicate that it probably recently calved from the ice shelf".

The rectangular iceberg appeared to be freshly calved from Larsen C, which in July 2017 released the mammoth A-68 'ice island, ' a chunk of ice about the size of the state of Delaware.

Scientists are concerned about how ice at Earth's poles will fare with warming temperatures, and how melting ice will affect sea levels around the world, but Bartholomaus is hesitant to draw direct links to climate change.

It looks so flawless that it seems Photoshopped - but a odd perfectly rectangular iceberg near Antarctica is a natural phenomenon, NASA scientists say.

It's hard to tell exactly how big the iceberg is from the photo, but experts said it was probably more than 1.6km (1 mile) across.

NASA shared the image of the iceberg, which looks like it was perfectly chiseled away from a block of ice, on social media late last week.

Floating off the Antarctic coast, there's a profoundly angular iceberg that has unwittingly become the object of internet intrigue.

A NASA spokesman said: "It will yield an unprecedented three-dimensional view of Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, ice shelves and sea ice". They are wide and flat and long, like sheet cake, Brunt said. Brunt added that only about 10 percent of the iceberg's mass is visible, the rest being underwater.

The odd mass, known as an angular iceberg, was spotted during a flyover of the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

"You can think of the shelf like a bank account", she says.
