Hurricane Willa bears down on Mexico

Hurricane Willa May Have An Impact On The Weather In The US

- Hurricane Willa crashed ashore in western Mexico Tuesday, lashing the Pacific coast with powerful winds and heavy rain before weakening to a tropical depression as it moved inland.

Torrential rains began in the afternoon, and emergency officials said they had evacuated more than 4,250 people in coastal towns and set up 58 shelters before the risky storm.

There could be 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches of rain and strong gusts of wind up to 15 to 20 miles per hour along the coast, the service said Thursday morning.

Farther to the south, the remnants of Tropical Storm Vicente brought heavy rain that caused deadly flooding and mudslides.

Willa briefly reached Category 5 strength Monday but weakened to a Category 3 hurricane when it made landfall Tuesday and quickly lost steam after that.

"An extremely unsafe storm surge is likely along portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico in southern Sinaloa and Nayarit, especially near and to the south of where the center of Willa makes landfall", the US Hurricane Center announced Tuesday morning.

Willa was expected to bring life-threatening storm surges, rain and wind to residents on Mexico's Pacific shore, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

It is aiming at a low-lying region where towns sit amid farmland tucked between the sea and lagoons.

The federal government issued a decree of "extraordinary emergency" for 19 municipalities in Nayarit and Sinaloa states.

On Tuesday morning, the storm swirled 35 miles southwest of the Islas Maria, a group of islands about 60 miles offshore.

More than 450 mm of rain is likely to lash pockets of the Mexican states of Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa.

The town mayor, Hugo Moreno, said rescue workers were still trying to communicate with several seaside communities.

Expect a high of 48 degrees in Providence and a chance of showers, primarily between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

It is now moving north-eastwards across Mexico where it is expected to lose strength rapidly, and is likely to become a tropical storm or depression on Wednesday.

"The people don't want to evacuate, but it's for their security", he said.

Schools in the affected areas have been closed since Monday. Mazatlan is a popular vacation spot and home to a large number of American and Canadian expatriates.

It's too early to tell for certainty if this will affect SC, but so far the forecast shows no impact for our area, said the service said Thursday morning.
