This tropical disturbance will likely become the next named storm in the Atlantic

Oscar, which became a tropical storm Saturday, is strengthening and expected to become a hurricane later Sunday but land isn't threatened, according to the National Hurricane Center. Oscar will be steered west until Monday when the storm system now impacting the U.S. East Coast blocks its progress. It was moving west at 12 miles per hour.

If Oscar becomes a hurricane it will be the eighth so far this season, which will come to a close on November 30. It is expected to turn towards the northwest on Monday and may rush across the north-central Atlantic by the middle of the week.

Tropical Storm Oscar could become a hurricane later today.

Winds of 40 mph extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km) from the center. It was moving southwest at 12 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour. The minimum central pressure has dropped to 989 mb. The storm is located well northeast of Puerto Rico and well southeast of Bermuda in the open ocean.

It's too soon to say with certainty whether the system will affect the U.S.
