Nintendo Switch Just Outsold Gamecube's Lifetime Sales
Now, according to a new report from Nintendo, the Switch's lifetime sales just surpassed those of the GameCube. The Switch's sales figures don't appear to be plateauing at the moment, though admittedly the console will have to do some pretty frantic holiday sales if it wants to meet its projected yearly goal. Quarterly sales, meanwhile, rose to ¥221 billion ($2 billion) from ¥220 billion, behind company estimates. "Reaching their Switch target really depends on the holiday quarter, especially the new Super Smash Bros. game".
"The PlayStation is doing great, Spider-Man sold like insane in the second quarter", said Kazunori Ito, an analyst at Morningstar Investment Services in Tokyo.
The Japanese outfit expects Switch sales to reach 20 million units during the current fiscal year, although only 5.07 million consoles were sold over the first six months.
The firm said it hopes to grow sales of the Switch further by "continuing to introduce compelling new software".
Furukawa added that Nintendo's growth also relied on "more focus on online play", and "more genres and diverse games to draw in people who don't now play on Switch".
This resulted in a 34 billion yen ($301 million USD) profit in the last quarter, up from ¥30 billion a year earlier. Released in 2001 and sold through 2007, that system generated worldwide sales of 21.74 million units. But Sony is breaking that pattern with a strong collection of gaming titles for the holiday shopping season, including homegrown hit Spider-man, that's setting up the PlayStation 4 for its best-year ever. This includes first, and third-party games. We are also seeing an increase in Joy-Con sell-through with the release of this title. In May, Pokemon Co. announced it would no longer release games on the handheld device, moving the best-selling franchise to the Switch.
