3 Girl Scouts, 1 Woman Killed in Wisconsin Hit-and-Run
Three girls were killed and a fourth was in critical condition Saturday after the driver of a pickup truck struck members of a Girl Scout troop picking up trash on the side of a Wisconsin road, police said. "Girl Scouts everywhere stand with you during this hard time". A fourth girl survived but was in critical condition Saturday night at a Minnesota hospital.
The incident is still under investigation by the Lake Hallie Police Department. The driver was identified as an adult male, Colton Treu age 21 of Chippewa Falls.
A relative of a girl who was not hurt in the crash said the children were fourth graders at Halmstad Elementary School in Chippewa Falls, 180 miles west of Green Bay.
A western Wisconsin school district is making counselors available for students following the deaths three Girl Scouts and a parent who were killed in a hit-and-run crash along a rural road.
The group had adopted the rural road and performed the community service along it before, something they did while wearing bright yellow safety vests and accompanied by adults. Sunday night, in the rain with candles in hand, was the latter.
Teddy bears, balloons and candles sat on two wooden benches in front of Halmstad Elementary School on November 4 while dozens of families met inside with faith leaders and counselors.
The girls went to Halmstad Elementary and Southview Elementary, according to the district.
In a message to parents, Superintendent Heidi Eliopoulos said: "This is a hard time for our students, families and staff".
Golden added the district and school crisis teams assembled support networks for students, staff and families.
"It's been very nice". Other members of the troop were picking up trash from the opposite shoulder. The names of the dead were not immediately released. The Star Tribune reported that the crash happened before a hill and there were no blind spots, and Sokup said it was "not an unsafe area".
Sokup said it was not immediately known if there were other factors that might have led the driver to leave the road. The speed limit changes quickly from a 55-mph to a 35-mph zone. He was jailed Sunday and charged with four counts of homicide through the negligent use of a vehicle.
"It's just devastating. It hits me especially hard since I have two children of my own", Chippewa Falls resident Jill Schafer said.
