Rooney, 33, is set to make a shock return to the England squad when Gareth Southgate's side take on United States of America in a friendly next month.

Gareth Southgate has agreed to allow Rooney a "farewell" one-off appearance to earn his 120th cap for England.

The 33-year-old said he is "truly humbled and hugely excited" to be making his way back into the fold for the November friendly, having last played for the Three Lions in November 2016.

England's all-time top scorer called time on his global career in August 2017 after winning 119 caps and scoring 53 goals for his country.

He said at the time: "It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches".

The DC United striker, who retired from global football in August 2017, will make a one-off comeback in the fund-raising friendly to honour a record-breaking worldwide career, according to The Sun.

And he will now be honoured with one final cap in a money-spinning game that is set to raise funds for the RSPCA and the Wayne Rooney Foundation. "It's fitting the match will be against the United States of America".

It is understood he will start the match on the bench before coming on as a substitute in the closing stages so supporters can show their appreciation for his years of service to the national side.

Roney's last England appearance came against Scotland and Hampden Park, but after the game he announced his worldwide retirement.

Although Harry Kane is the current England captain, he will give the armband over to Rooney for the special occasion.

"This tribute to Wayne is a unique opportunity that is befitting of our nation's record goalscorer".

Unfortunately, the fairytale ended this week as Rooney missed a penalty in a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to the Columbus Crew.
