Tigress who killed 13 finally shot dead after three-month search

Killer tiger shot dead
Man-eater tigress T1, also known as Avni, was shot dead late Friday night in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra.
India's Supreme Court had issued a hunting order for T1 - blamed for 13 deaths since June 2016 - in September, ruling that she could be killed if tranquillizers failed.
Wildlife activists went online to protest Avni's killing, saying the forest department could have captured her instead of killing her, which orphaned her cubs.
She had been hunted for more than three months by forest officials who used trained sniffer dogs, trap cameras, drones and a hang-glider, expert trackers and sharp-shooters.
Officials said that they believed the animal had developed a taste for humans as victims had chunks of flesh bitten from them - these people do know that tigers are carnivores, right? The India unit of animal rights organisation PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - said that Avni was killed "in possible contempt of court and in apparent violation of the Wildlife Protection Act and the guidelines of National Tiger Conservation Authority", PTI reported. She was shot by marksman Asgar Ali, son of well-known sharpshooter Nawab Shafat Ali.
Gandhi also expressed concern over the well being of the two cubs left behind after the killing of their mother. There is no update on her cubs.
"Despite the forest officials being committed to tranquilise, capture and qurantine the tigress, the trigger-happy shooter has killed her on his own under orders of Mungantiwar".
The forest department outlined the course of events in a press release.
Elsewhere, TV footage showed locals celebrating and distributing candies, saying they were relieved that the terror unleashed by the tigress was over. When certain about the identity, a team member attempted a dart that hit it, but the tigress moved back and charged at the team, which was in a open gypsy. "So as a reflex action of self-defence, Mr. Asghar fired from a distance of about 8-10 metres. The tigress died on the spot", according to a statement from the Maharashtra Forest Department.
Reacting to the killing of Avni, Gandhi in a series of tweets lashed out at the Maharashtra government for giving the orders to kill her despite opposition from several stakeholders.
The cologne, tested with success on jaguars at the Bronx Zoo, got spritzed in areas of the western state of Maharashtra where the killer tigress was suspected of hiding.
