Amazon could make northern Virginia its second home

In another tweet about an hour earlier, Grella criticized an earlier story in the Post - owned by Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos - for speculating about the possible second headquarters location based on flight patterns of Bezos' jet.

Ralph Northam didn't offer any hints when he was asked on WTOP's Ask the Governor about published reports that say Amazon is focusing in on Crystal City in Arlington.

People close to the process told the Post that the company could move several hundred employees to one of two office buildings that have been slated for redevelopment.

Meanwhile, on Twitter, Amazon's director of economic development Mike Grella blasted the unnamed sources leaking information about the e-tailer's HQ2 decision. As well as owning the Post, Bezos has a home in the area.

Amazon announced a year ago that the retail giant was looking to open a second headquarters somewhere in the North America, bringing with it as many as 50,000 new jobs.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, asked on WTOP Radio on Wednesday about speculation that Crystal City was the front-runner said, "A lot of us are anxiously awaiting a decision, an announcement from Amazon". For starters, Amazon may be having similar discussions with other finalists.

Amazon is in "advanced discussions" about placing its second headquarters in Northern Virginia, seemingly dealing a blow to Toronto's hopes of luring the online retailer here.

A spokesperson for Amazon declined to comment. The company has said it would invest $5 billion in the new headquarters.

Amazon is expected to make its decision before the end of the year. The Post added that a top real estate developer in the area, JBG Smith, has pulled some of its buildings off the leasing market, and that local officials have discussed how to make a public announcement on Amazon's selection, sometime later this month.
