She was joined shortly after on Tuesday night by Omar, who ran for the Democrats in Minnesota's fifth district. She was defeated in the general election in November of a year ago.
"The first thing I think about when somebody says you're going to be the first Muslim is celebrate this moment", Tlaib told CBS News.
"We changed the course of history at a time we thought it was impossible".
In a year when a record number of women are running for Congress and races across the country include more candidates of color and more gay, lesbian and transgender candidates, Tlaib and Omar add to the diversity of newcomers to the electoral process.
In 1995, they emigrated to the United States, initially settling in Arlington, Virginia and then moving to Minneapolis.
Tlaib, the daughter of Palestinian immigrants, said in recent interviews that she favors a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as opposed to a two-state solution that would establish a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
Tlaib is also considered a Democratic Socialist. I will be using my position in Congress so that no country, not one, should be able to get aid from the United States when they still promote that kind of injustice.
Tlaib was endorsed by filmmaker Michael Moore and Sen. Both women - Ilhan Omar, 37, and Rashida Tlaib, 42 - are Democrats from the Midwest and outspoken advocates of minority communities that have found themselves in the sights of US President Donald Trump's anti-immigrant policies. "This whole idea of a two-state solution, it doesn't work".
"I have proven myself to be someone who shows up, takes on the hard fight and delivers, and I am ready to do that for the people of the 5th Congressional District", stated Ilhan after winning in the primaries. DFL is the state's Democratic Party.
She is not only the second Muslim women elected in Congress but also the first Somali-American.
