Wednesday's event, which began with the president framing Tuesday's election results as a victory for himself and the Republican party, was Trump's first planned, open-ended press conference at the White House since February 2017, and only the second since he took office.
Trump had particularly nasty words for CNN'sJim Acosta, who said he wanted to challenge a statement Trump made during the midterm campaigns.
A digest of the top political stories from the Globe, sent to your inbox Monday-Friday.
Acosta asked Trump about his rhetoric concerning the illegal alien horde that's approaching or southern border.
"Wait. You know why we need the people?" I'll tell you what, CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them.
"I think you should let me run the country", he told CNN reporter Jim Acosta when pressed further about his immigration claims.
He repeatedly shut down CNN's April Ryan when she tried to ask a question, refusing to cede the microphone to her.
Acosta later asked about the Russian investigation, which Trump then called a "hoax". You are rude, bad person. You shouldn't be working for CNN, ' the president said to Acosta.
"I consider it to be an invasion", Trump responded. "You rudely interrupted him". "The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is awful", he said, referring to the White House press secretary. "You shouldn't treat people that way".
Mr. Acosta reluctantly surrendered the microphone to Mr. Alexander, who then offered a defense that his colleague is a "diligent" reporter.
Trump shot back: "Well, I'm not a big fan of yours either, to be honest". "You aren't the best".
Acosta continued to ask questions, including whether Trump was "concerned" about potential indictments coming from the Mueller probe.
"When you report fake news.you are an enemy of the people", he said.
