And the former governor also energized Tennessee Democrats who had long struggled to gain traction in the state.

Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn won Tennessee's open U.S. Senate seat Tuesday after a campaign yoked to President Donald Trump.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., speaks to supporters after she was declared the victor over former Gov. Phil Bredesen in their race for the U.S. Senate Nov. 6, 2018, in Franklin, Tenn. Blackburn will be the first female senator to represent her state. Bredesen angered Democrats and rabid liberals by announcing that he would have supported Brett Kavanaugh's nomination for the Supreme Court, declaring that there was no evidence to support last-minute sexual assault allegations against him.

A conservative firebrand and a regular on cable TV news, Blackburn had campaigned as a committed Trump ally, even more so than many other Republican candidates this year. "There's somebody else here that you should vote for and she's very good at that stuff", Bredesen said Sunday, when asked about his final message to voters on the fence.

In her victory speech last night, Blackburn said the campaign shows that Tennesseans "want leaders who are going to be there to work with the president and keep this nation on the path to prosperity that we are on today".

Early polls had Bredesen in the lead. On the Democratic side, two Super PACs affiliated with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Pac and Majority Forward, collectively spent a minimum of $15 million. Bredesen's moderate stances, he predicted, would give these voters an easy excuse not to vote for her. When the pundits had all but counted her out, she just fought harder. "Having served at the state level as well as the federal level, Marsha will help bring power back to the states and truly make America great again".
