Report: Bryce Harper Turned Down $300 Million Contract From Nationals
At the general managers' meetings on Tuesday night, Nationals GM Mike Rizzo confirmed the two sides discussed a deal, adding that the team is not "closing any doors" with Harper in free agency. The system is now perversely set up to encourage teams to go to one extreme or the other in terms of competitiveness, which hurts the overall product as well as specific things like the free agent market. It would give them one of the biggest stars in the game. Looks like they want to get the bad taste of Dexter Fowler's deal out of their mouth and throw some more money to big-name free agents! Harper and Boras reportedly had expected bidding to start at 10 years for $350 million. An aggressive offer here likely tops Giancarlo Stanton's record $325 million contract, so the hunch is the Nats went with something like 10 years and $350 million.
The simple answer is the biggest contract in Major League Baseball history. Despite Los Angeles making a trade offer, the teams "could not strike a deal", reports the Times.
So what is Harper going to be looking for? "I think we have a good strategy in place, a good plan in place, and we have started to begin that process and we will see where it takes us". They can not wait for Harper to make his decision - which many in the industry believe will come no sooner than the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas next month - and miss out on the market.
Boras tabbed Harper as a "generational" and "iconic" player - citing the Nationals' stark increase in attendance, television ratings and overall franchise value since Harper joined the team.
Zack Greinke ($US34 million), David Price ($US31 million) and Clayton Kershaw ($US31 million) all got more. Even though Harper is still only 26, a 14-year deal with an average annual value of $30 million per season felt a bit excessive.
