The former captain's one-off return for the Wayne Rooney Foundation worldwide against the United States will dominate the manager's press conference this afternoon but Southgate is again planning to select a youthful party with Jadon Sancho and James Maddison keeping their places.

Southgate cited the examples of the worldwide tributes paid to Lukas Podolski, David Silva and Wesley Sneijder by Germany, Spain and Netherlands respectively in recent years to justify Rooney's selection, adding that he considers the national team's heritage a vital part of the culture he is trying to build. Both games will be at Wembley. This is a chance for not only a great player, but an iconic player and top goalscorer.

It was also confirmed that the 33-year-old would not wear his usual number 10 shirt and would not captain the side.

Ryan Giggs has backed the shock England return of former Manchester United colleague Wayne Rooney by applauding it as an opportunity to recognise an "iconic player".

"I think it's great", Kane said after his two goals for club Tottenham against PSV kept their Champions League hopes alive.

"I'm glad that we'll see him in an England shirt one last time". He deserves it. He was a great captain for us. "But I don't think you can give caps out like gifts". It's a real good thing for everyone to be a part of.

Harry Kane (on right) will cede the England captaincy to Wayne Rooney (on left) in honour of Rooney's legendary career.

Following the United States of America friendly, England are in action three days later against Croatia but Rooney isn't expected to play in.

"If we're also talking about helping young players develop in the worldwide set-up, then surely celebrating Wayne's career in this way is an example to the next generation of England stars".

"I've worked with Wayne, played with Wayne, and he doesn't get recognised for what ability he still has and did have at his peak".

Callum Wilson has been called up by England for the first time after an impressive start to the season with Bournemouth.
