6 injured after Fly Jamaica flight headed to Toronto crash-lands in Guyana

Multiple Passengers Injured After A Toronto Bound Plane Crash Landed Due To

The captain of the ill-fated Fly Jamaica Airlines jet that made an emergency landing at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport alleged that several personal items were stolen from the plane, police said.

The plane had 118 passengers, two infants and eight crew members on board.

The 118 passengers on board the Boeing 757-200 included 82 Canadians.

St. Lucia News was reporting that six people were injured, but they were stable and being treated at Diamond Regional Hospital in Georgetown.

The flight, which was heading to Pearson Airport, experienced some technical difficulties and had to return to CJIA.

The Fly Jamaica plane which was en route to Toronto is said to have developed a "technical problem". "We are providing local assistance and will release further information as soon as it is available", the carrier said in a statement.

It returned to Georgetown's Cheddi Jagan International Airport just before 2am local time (6am GMT). An emergency inflatable slide had been deployed from one of the front doors.

Images posted on the airport's Facebook page and various sites showed the plane appearing to have gone through a chain link fence, with one of its engines tilted upward and resting on the fencing.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is leading an investigation and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, which automatically assists with inquiries under worldwide rules, was notified, officials said.

Bedessee said the incident had left him "very shaken and very, I don't know, nervous". The runway then was 2,255 metres long, but is now being extended to 3,048 metres.
