Democrats’ House takeover spurs hope for farm bill this year

But by seizing the House of Representatives, Democrats now have real power for the first time in two years.

With the Republicans keeping control of the Senate, the outcome in the House could mean gridlock for Trump's agenda on Capitol Hill - or, conversely, it could open a new era of deal-making.

Data gathered by AP VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 115,000 voters and about 22,000 nonvoters, suggests Trump's closing arguments about the courts and border security cost his party seats in the House. Overall, 43 per cent of voters said they were very concerned about women not being believed when they make allegations of sexual misconduct, and another 35 per cent were somewhat concerned.

They could now launch investigations into Mr Trump's administration and business affairs, from tax returns to potential conflicts of interest.

"Our concern is, of course, that they will interfere and say the President's above the law", Pelosi said.

"If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level".

"We know that the diversity in our ranks is a strength and a reflection of the American people", she wrote. Democratic party leaders in the House will decide on the heads of committees, with seniority one of the major determining factors.

"We'd like to work together so our legislation will be bipartisan", she said.

"Women who had never run for anything stepped up to put their names on the ballot", she said.

It is possible the GOP will try to pass another tax bill in this year's remaining lame-duck session; less likely would be one final attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act before a Democratic House makes that a non-starter.

The fifth reason House Democrats might impeach Trump is that as the debate continues, it could become clear that the political risks are overstated.

Suburban districts outside Washington, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago, Denver and Dallas were considered prime targets for turnover by the Democrats because they were won by Hillary Clinton in 2016.

The president took his message around the country and managed to solidify and actually increase Republican control in the Senate.

They could make life hard for Mr Trump by launching another congressional investigation into allegations of Russian interference on his behalf in the 2016 election.

"We as Democrats are here to strengthen the institution we serve and not to have it be a rubber stamp on President Trump", Pelosi told reporters Wednesday. And she said Mr. Whitaker "should recuse himself from any involvement in Mueller's investigations", given his "threats" to weaken the probe.

He has vowed to demand Trump's tax returns from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

"Where [GOP gubernatorial candidate Rep. Ron] DeSantis and [GOP Senate candidate Gov. Rick] Scott did well were places that Obama did pretty respectably in 2008 and 2012", said Schale, who helped lead the former president's successful efforts in Florida. The columnist asserts, "A bigger wave would have been nice, but control of the House was the Big Enchilada of this election-and Democrats grabbed it. Trump's life is about to change in ways he will not like". In a statement to the Monitor Wednesday, he said, "the press likes to play up our debates, but we all want to move this country forward".

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who is seeking to reclaim the gavel as House speaker, called it a "new day in America".

The president criticized Republican candidates who apparently did not support him enough and lost congressional seats in Tuesday's elections.

On Tuesday night, Trump called Pelosi to congratulate her on the Democrats winning the House majority, Pelosi's chief of staff Drew Hammill said in a tweet earlier this week. On legislative prospects, Trump said he could potentially work with Democrats on issues such as taxes, infrastructure and health care, saying it "really could be a attractive, bipartisan type of situation".

But while campaigning, many Republicans insisted they supported protecting that coverage, including Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, who was running for senator, at the same time the state - in its official capacity - was supporting a lawsuit to overturn the current protections for pre-existing conditions.
