Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are set to become the first Muslim women elected to the US Congress

Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, Democrats from Minnesota and MI respectively, will be the first Muslim women to serve in congress.

"The kind of opportunity that came from the resistance to this terrible person in the White House and Republicans kind of adopting that message, that being a strong man kind of sustained them, allowed for us to say there is a kind of politics that's about hope, about joy, about optimism, about inclusion", she said. Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American Democrat who ran for the House in Minnesota, will join Tlaib in Congress.

Omar, a Somali-American was once a refugee, while Tlaib is the first Pakistani-American woman in congress. They also become the first Muslim women to be elected to Congress. They were also vocal in their support for each another, with Tlaib writing to Omar on Twitter in August that: "I can't wait to walk onto the floor of United States Congress hand in hand with you".

Congresswoman Karen Bass, projected to win a fifth term in Tuesday's U.S. midterm elections, has visited Kenya twice in recent years.

Who are Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar?

"I like a lot of her talking points and her stances", said Cory Oberfoell, who doorknocked for Zielinski and attended the Minnesota GOP's election night party. She ran a grass roots campaign that took on the "Queens Democratic Party machine" and championed progressive proposals, such as the abolition of the Immigration Customs Enforcement (Ice), a single-payer health care plan and tuition-free college.

Omar addressed key points she plans to address in Congress to a crowd brimming with supporters on Tuesday.

Her parents were Palestinian immigrants from the West Bank and Jerusalem.

In Boston, city council woman Ayanna Pressley made history by becoming the first black woman the state of MA has ever sent to Congress. Pressley ran unopposed after she ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Michael Capuano in the primaries.

The result of the elections means that the Republicans no longer hold both wings of the USA congress, handing President Donald Trump's political opponents a stronger foothold in Washington.

Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants and became the first Muslim female member of Michigan's state legislature a decade ago.
