Fanned by high winds and fueled by low humidity and dry vegetation, the fires spread rapidly Thursday and overnight into Friday. Residents in affluent Malibu are the latest to be at risk from scalding flames caused by the Woolsey Fire, spreading southwards from Los Angeles.

The Hill Fire had consumed 10,000 acres, or 15 square miles, according to Cal Fire, though the Ventura County Fire Department reported no injuries or structure losses at a Thursday night press conference.

USA media reports that schools have also been closed and evacuated due to the fire, and animals have been moved out of the LA Zoo in Griffith Park.

Approximately 75,000 homes are under evacuation orders in Ventura and Los Angeles counties Friday morning.

Mandatory evacuations have been issued for the Point Mugu Naval Base, Camarillo Springs, Vallecito Trailer Park, California State University Channel Islands, Dos Vientos (All areas outlined on map below) and the South Coast (all areas outlined on map below).

Some 20,000 acres of land have been left scorched in the wake of the fires, which remain zero percent under control as of Friday afternoon, according to officials. Early Friday, the whipping winds prevented fire commanders from ordering aerial assaults in the early morning hours, but some flights began at 5:30 a.m.as the wind died down. Gaddie explained how his team was able to evacuate Paradise city residents in a short amount of time.

"The challenges are, number one, competing resources", Richardson said.

The fire prompted the closure of all schools in the Las Virgenes Unified School District in Calabasas, as well as Viewpoint School, Montessori of Calabasas, Montessori of Calabasas Too and Muse School.
