Terrifying footage has emerged of the moment a man lunged at police with a knife in Melbourne's Bourke Street on Friday afternoon.

The knifeman then attacked three people, with one of them dead.

He said: "Three people have been stabbed, unfortunately one of them is deceased at the scene". The condition of the surviving pair is unknown.

According to them, the police initially responded to a report of a auto on fire near the corner of Swanston Street about 4.20 pm (10.50 am IST).

The man then follows the attacker as he continues down the street with police around him, once again pushing his trolley towards the group.

"A man was arrested at the scene and has been taken to hospital under police guard in a critical condition". At a press conference, a police spokesperson said there are no links to terrorism at this stage.

"This is Victoria Police, please evacuate the area". The journalist also said an emergency speaker system was warning people to avoid the area.

Officers said they "are not looking for anyone further at this early stage".

Witnesses told The Age they were shopping in the area when they saw a man throw what they believed to be a bomb into a vehicle before it exploded.

The attacker reportedly torched his auto before the vehicle burst into flames.

Another said they heard "what sounded like a bomb and gun shot".

Twitter user Meegan May wrote: "Guy seems to have set his vehicle on fire, then attacked police with a knife".

'Police response was swift and overwhelming.

It was brought under control within about five minutes, a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said. I heard at least one gunshot initially, ' one said.

It comes as a trial continues into the horrifying rampage in Bourke St in January a year ago.

"I didn't know what was happening there was just so much chaos and screaming".

James Gargasoulas is accused of deliberately crashing into pedestrians, killing six and injuring 27 others.
