North Carolina Active Shooter School Was A

HAMPSTEAD - Pender County Sheriff's deputies are on the scene of an active shooter call at Topsail High School.

According to the school website, school begins at 8:30 a.m.

The sheriff's spokesman said law enforcement officers were still searching the campus as a precaution but preliminary reports indicate that it was faulty equipment.

"There's no active shooter", said Pender County Emergency Management Director Tom Collins, reported the StarNews in Wilmington. "Law enforcement responded immediately and it has been determined there is no shooter and no weapon". "It's a malfunctioning water heater".

There were no reports of injuries and students were not due to report to class until 8 a.m.

"Pender County Schools is thankful everyone is safe and thanks local emergency services for its immediate response", the district said. The equipment sounds similar to gunfire when it is not working properly.

Collins said a popping sound from the heater "sounded just like an AR-15 (semiautomatic rifle) going off", the newspaper reported.

Authorities were alerted around 6:30 a.m., according to ABC11, The News & Observer's media partner.

Local TV coverage showed police vehicles blocking the road leading to Topsail High School and a helicopter circling overhead.

Hampstead is about 20 miles north of the city of Wilmington.

Students that were already on buses were transported to the Lowes Foods across from the school.
