Prince Charles said he will stop "meddling" in public affairs when he becomes king, telling a BBC documentary crew his role as sovereign would be very different to his life as heir to the throne.
By contrast, Charles is an outspoken campaigner on issues ranging from organic and traditional farming and wildlife conservation to herbal medicine and urban planning.
"So, you can't be the same as the sovereign if you're the Prince of Wales or the heir".
Asked whether his public campaigning will go on, he added: "No, it won't".
"I'm not that stupid", he said.
In the documentary, Prince William extols his father's grandparenting skills, "when he's there, he's brilliant", adding that the parents of three children "need him there as much as possible", according to Metro UK.
"I think that was very touching, sitting where I was, you couldn't hear what he said".
Harry, 34, approached Prince Charles, who celebrates his 70th birthday next week, to step in after Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, was unable to come to the Windsor Castle nuptials.
"It's something I'm working more heavily on, put it that way".
"It's the things he does behind the scenes that people don't know about.I don't think people realise quite how kind he is".
"I find it hard to believe that almost thirty years have passed since I first came to this city and having finally made it back here, Ladies and Gentlemen, all I can say is that "God don butta my bread!"
Lord Hain said he welcomed "regular interactions" with Charles when he was a cabinet minister.
