Fears for Russia probe as Trump fires Jeff Sessions

In an interview with Reuters, Clovis said Whitaker is "a wonderful man" and "a dear friend". "It's not ok for someone to break the law and be above the law".

Whitaker, a former U.S. Attorney who had been Sessions' chief of staff, was publicly critical of Mueller and the investigation before joining the Justice Department.

At a protest in support of Mueller outside the White House, a crowd of several hundred protesters shouted anti-Trump slogans.

"Whitaker is recused from all aspects of the Special Counsel's probe, and ensure that the Department of Justice safeguards the integrity of the Mueller investigation", said Rep. Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.

Demonstrators in New York City chanted slogans including "Hands off Mueller" and "Nobody's above the law" before marching downtown.

Trump defended the ban by saying: "This is a very sacred place". Whitaker, however, has made comments skeptical of the Mueller probe.

About six Congressional Democrats including Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Ron Wyden and Cory Booker stressed that Trump may be attempting to disrupt the Mueller investigation and called on Whitaker to recuse himself.

According to U.S. media reports on Thursday, Mueller's team have started writing the final report of the investigation.

The local protest was spearheaded by Capital Area Indivisible, an Augusta-area group that is the local chapter organization that resists the agendas of Republicans and President Donald Trump, and Suit Up Maine, a progressive advocacy group.

The ongoing investigation has produced guilty pleas from four former Trump aides.

"I feel he (Trump) is the bully in the china shop and we are the china", Sheaffer said.

Jeff Sessions, the former attorney general, recused himself from overseeing an investigation into the president's campaign and possible collusion with Russian Federation in March 2017.

She said Graham's newest remarks on the Sessions replacement is "a tap dance that's getting old".

The president then appointed Sessions' chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, to run the Justice Department on an interim basis.

Whitaker has his supporters too, including a USA senator from Iowa, Joni Ernst. "Unelected judges are deciding numerous issues of the day", he complained, adding that Marbury was a bad ruling and we should revisit the Court as "the final arbiter of constitutional issues".

"You would always take that meeting".

"I'm disappointed in the attorney general for many reasons", Trump told reporters in September. She said she wants a firm response from Graham.

DONALD TRUMP JR: Could the US President's son be the biggest scalp claimed by Robert Mueller?

Mueller's team is paid for under a permanent fund for investigations by independent counsels that was established in 1998, which means it's not subject to Congress's routine spending debates.

"Whitaker must recuse and Congress must act to protect the Mueller investigation", said an organizer of the march outside the White House.

Mueller is reportedly writing his final report on his investigation that's cast a cloud over the Trump administration. "Worth a read", he tweeted.

Protesters said they fear what will happen to Mueller's probe into Russian actions before the 2016 election, which also is looking into whether any of Trump's associates were involved with Russian efforts and whether Trump himself impeded these investigations.

Mueller is investigating allegations of Russian meddling and collusion in the 2016 USA presidential election. "That's where the left seems to be combining those two issues".
