At a protest in support of Mueller outside the White House, a crowd of several hundred protesters shouted anti-Trump slogans.
"Whitaker is recused from all aspects of the Special Counsel's probe, and ensure that the Department of Justice safeguards the integrity of the Mueller investigation", said Rep. Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.
Demonstrators in New York City chanted slogans including "Hands off Mueller" and "Nobody's above the law" before marching downtown.
Trump defended the ban by saying: "This is a very sacred place". Whitaker, however, has made comments skeptical of the Mueller probe.
About six Congressional Democrats including Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Ron Wyden and Cory Booker stressed that Trump may be attempting to disrupt the Mueller investigation and called on Whitaker to recuse himself.
According to U.S. media reports on Thursday, Mueller's team have started writing the final report of the investigation.

"You would always take that meeting".
"I'm disappointed in the attorney general for many reasons", Trump told reporters in September. She said she wants a firm response from Graham.

Mueller's team is paid for under a permanent fund for investigations by independent counsels that was established in 1998, which means it's not subject to Congress's routine spending debates.
"Whitaker must recuse and Congress must act to protect the Mueller investigation", said an organizer of the march outside the White House.
Mueller is reportedly writing his final report on his investigation that's cast a cloud over the Trump administration. "Worth a read", he tweeted.
Protesters said they fear what will happen to Mueller's probe into Russian actions before the 2016 election, which also is looking into whether any of Trump's associates were involved with Russian efforts and whether Trump himself impeded these investigations.
Mueller is investigating allegations of Russian meddling and collusion in the 2016 USA presidential election. "That's where the left seems to be combining those two issues".
