What we know about the gunman in the Thousand Oaks bar shooting

At least eleven wounded in shooting at bar in southern California
Authorities haven't identified what motivated former marine Ian David Long to open fire during college night at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, around 40 miles (64 kilometres) from downtown Los Angeles. They determined that he was not an immediate danger to himself or others and that he could not be involuntarily taken to a mental hospital. At the time, police said Long "was somewhat irate, acting a little irrationally".
His military service lasted almost five years, and he was honourably discharged with the rank of corporal in 2013, the Pentagon said. Many of those at the bar were regulars, she said.
"Tonight we are a hurting city but we are a community of love, of compassion and of unity", Thousand Oaks Mayor Andy Fox said at a vigil Thursday night. But we are a city of love, compassion and community...
He said his department had "several contacts" with Long over the years, for minor incidents including a traffic collision, and in 2015 when he was beaten up at a local bar.
"I would make fun of him, because he would drag me there".
Sgt. Eric Buschow, who said Helus was a friend, described him as a "cop's cop".
A neighbor said Long's mother "lived in fear" of what her son might do, saying when police were called to the house earlier this year "it took them about a half a day to get him out of the house". "I don't want thoughts", she told reporters. "Well, I don't want to say he was dead, but he was shot". He added, "Obviously he had something going on in his head that would cause him to do something like this".
Long's activities in the days before the shooting remain unknown.
He went to Afghanistan from November 2010 to June 2011.
"Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff's sergeant".
Whitler said then she heard "Get up, he's coming!" and people trampled on each other to get out.
Long, whose Marines unit was based in Hawaii, was married in 2009 in Honolulu.
The FBI was seeking to build a profile of the gunman and discover a motive for the country's latest shooting rampage.
"It feels like a dream, and I wish that I can just wake up from it and hear from both of them again", Piasecki said.
After leaving the Marines in 2013, Long went to college in California. Witnesses said many of those inside were college students. A sheriff's deputy, 12 attendees and the gunmen were killed.
A few weeks after the Vegas shooting, the bar held a benefit concert for five people from the area who were killed, and now-eerie social media posts show a number of survivors holding up a "Route 91" sign inside the bar at a six-month anniversary event.
One was a veteran police officer who didn't hesitate to run toward danger. "It could have been much, much worse". No other information on the victims was immediately known. Dan Manrique was a Marine Corps veteran and Cody Coffman was in the process of talking with Army recruiters. California Lutheran University president Chris Kimball said that he had "heroically saved lives".
The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler of NY, said lawmakers would start crafting a gun-control bill when the House convenes with a Democratic majority in early January.
Authorities say there were multiple injuries - including one officer - after a man opened fire in Southern California bar late Wednesday.
"I tried to get as many people to cover as I could", Knapp told the Associated Press.
